Side Keys. Text Keyboard, Hardware. This also has a dust cover which I find hard to use because the black plastic is very flimsy and difficult to open and close.

The left side has a 2. The PTT buttons are up top: the left button controls the PTT external speakers, and on the right it brings up a list of phone numbers. You can scroll through the list of phone numbers using the rocker on the phone's left side, and press the left PTT button to initiate a call to the selected number. This, of course, would only work for those numbers with PTT capabilities.

Open the flip and you're greeted with a nice, bright 65, color screen. In the keypad area you'll find the usual Home key, two soft-keys, back key and an OK button in the center of the direction pad. I have an average sized hand, and I find it difficult to push the buttons, especially Home, back and the two soft-keys, as they're too narrow though long. The call and hang up buttons are also small, but the number keys are usable. While I had the phone, I never needed to extend the antenna, as coverage was very good, and the reception decent.

The phone has 64 megs of flash ROM with 27 megs available for storage, and 22mb of available RAM at boot with no additional programs running. WMSE runs very well on the i without any of the issues that MPx suffered, nor does it have any problems multitasking. I used the Messaging feature extensively and I had great luck with it. I have used the MPx to retrieve my e-mails, and run a variety of other applications as well.

My MPx has a lot of bugs, from freezing to crashes, but the i proved to be very stable. It took 40 minutes to download e-mails 15,k : not quick, but usable. The i does not have good battery life, perhaps due to the relatively middling capacity mAh Lithium Ion battery. I had the phone fully charged, and after downloading the e-mails, the phone was completely drained. It was certainly a surprise, as I did not have the screen on most of the time. Keep your charger nearby if you're a heavy email user!

I then tested the phone with retrieving messages every 15 minutes. Again, the battery life was short as it didn't even last a day. Reception should be the biggest consideration for anyone purchasing a phone. No matter how cool the device is or how cheap the service, the phone must be able to make calls where you need it to. In comparison to my Sprint PPC , the i did pretty well. The Nextel i's phone-book capacity is limited only by available memory; the handset comes with 64MB of flash memory.

Of course, you get the advantage of having access to full Outlook contact information with the address book, including street addresses and notes. The Smartdial feature simplifies searching for contacts. Type to spell Cha, for example, and all contacts with those three letters in their names will appear.

One of the main draws of the Nextel i is its world phone capabilities. The handset comes with a SIM card, so you can make and receive calls in the United States and more than countries using a single phone number. This also includes support for Nextel's nationwide and international walkie-talkie services, which means you can instantly connect with users in the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and Peru. Other features include a speakerphone, a vibrate mode, a calculator, a task list, voice memos, and GPS capabilities for emergency calls.

While all these capabilities are great for a mobile professional, we are absolutely baffled and disappointed by the lack of Bluetooth. The phone's camera can take pictures in four qualities Best, Basic, Normal, and Fine and four sizes x, x, x, x, and 96x You can also adjust the contrast and the brightness settings, as well as choose from two shutter sounds; there's no silent option. Once you've taken a picture, you can rotate or flip the image, rename the file, view it as a slide show, or set it as wallpaper.

You can also send it to colleagues, friends, and family via e-mail, text message, or via the infrared port. Picture quality is decent for a camera phone, with bright colors and decent contrast. The camcorder takes video with sound and offers many of the same options as the camera, along with three quality settings: High, Normal, and Good. You can customize your phone with a variety of wallpaper, color schemes, and font sizes.

The i comes with Solitaire and Jawbreaker, although you can always download more games. Unfortunately, performance took a turn for the worse when it came to battery life. We reached a little more than 90 minutes of continuous talk time from the lithium-ion battery, which fell far short of Nextel's already unimpressive rating of minutes.

It's also worth noting that the handset heated up significantly after about 20 minutes of talk-time use.
