Booting from DVD-Rom is the recommended method of installation. Setup can also be run from within Windows. Windows Vista CTP Build x86 can be installed from within either the x86 or x64 Windows platforms, but additional x86 drivers installation for a new x86 Vista setup cannot be launched from x64 Windows. Setup can also be run by placing the contents of the extracted ISO image file in a small dedicated hard drive partition say of GB , and to run setup from that location.
This method of installation has been found to be much faster than the other installation methods described here. Our recommended minimum installation partition or disk size is 15GB for both Windows Vista and Longhorn Server x86 and x64 versions, but a partition size of 25GB or more is preferable to accommodate installation of a collection of software applications.
Preferably, Windows Vista should be installed to a partition created by Windows, or by the Windows Vista setup program using the "Advanced" tab. Hard drives including Windows Vista system partitions should NOT be partitioned using third-party partitioning software such as Partition Magic or Acronis. Native Windows partitioning tools should be used instead.
It is possible to load drivers for multiple devices at this stage, including such devices as graphics drivers, chipset drivers, TV cards etc. Other drivers can simply be installed post-setup. SETUP 1. C Setup is run from within Windows using the virtual CD drive. The process is similar to that experienced when using the installation method indicated in point 1.
B above. D Setup is run from within Windows by browsing to the Setup files located in a dedicated partition. The first screen you will see is a black startup splash screen. The next screen gives you three options, "Install now", "Release notes and advanced installation instructions", and "System recovery options". Select "Install now" to begin with the installation process. When running Setup from within Windows, a "Starting Installation" splash screen appears.
B, C, D Except when running setup straight from the DVD, there are then six active possibilities to choose from, "Go online to get the latest updates recommended ", "Do not get the latest updates", "Help me decide", "I want to help make Windows Installation better", "What information will be sent to Microsoft? Unless you are installing from an existing Windows installation, getting the latest setup updates will not work, so click on "Do not get the latest updates" to continue with setup.
At the next screen you need to enter your product key, which is the 25 character alphanumeric code provided with your installation disk, and then click "Next".
The option to automatically activate windows once you are online does not work on this build and you will need to activate Windows Vista within 14 days of installation once setup is complete. If the "Upgrade recommended " option is available active you may select this, bearing in mind that the Windows installation to be upgraded will be replaced.
Upgrading from Windows XP Service Pack 2 is supported in this build, but upgrading from earlier versions of Windows is not. Select "Custom advanced " for a new installation. Now, you need to select the drive or partition on which you intend to install Windows Vista. This will provide you with extra setup locations. If you're using a laptop computer, connect it to an AC electrical outlet and don't unplug or restart the computer during installation. Update any device drivers as necessary. You can do this by using Windows Update or by going to the device manufacturer's website.
If you have an uninterruptible power supply UPS connected to your computer, disconnect the connecting serial cable before installing SP2.
The installation automatically attempts to detect devices connected to serial ports, and UPS equipment can cause problems with the detection process. It's fine to leave your computer connected to a UPS for power. Some antivirus software might prevent SP2 from installing, or might slow down the installation. You can try temporarily disabling your antivirus software. If you do so, be sure that you're aware of the risks involved, and be sure to enable it after the service pack is installed.
Make sure you have enough free disk space to install SP2 even though much of that space will be reclaimed after the installation. If your computer is set to automatically install updates, you'll be prompted by Windows Update to install SP2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
If you aren't prompted to install SP2, follow these steps:. Click View available updates. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Install any updates listed as Recommended or Important , return to the Windows Update page, and then click Check for updates.
Follow the instructions on your screen. The computer might restart several times during the installation. After installation is complete, log on to your computer at the Windows logon prompt.
You might see a notification indicating whether the update was successful. You can also use this feature to quickly get a preview of any ongoing activity just to check their progress and get back to what you were doing before. With Windows Vista, they also introduced another way of switching through open programs. With the new windows sidebar, you now have access to a lot of useful features on your desktop.
