Through open-ended interviews with the interpreters who became witnesses of the era and who interpreted for statesmen and others during the Cold War, the paper seeks to shed light on the way the Cold War impacted interpreting. By drawing on the term gatekeeping, coined by Kurt Lewin at the beginning of the Cold War era, it is suggested that the Cold War impacted the topics that were interpreted, the common language pairs, and interpreters' lexical choices.
Thus, the Cold War not only paved the way for the birth of the interpreting profession but also itself became a gate through which the interpreting topics, languages, lexical choices, and even the interpreters-all of which were instruments of the regime-had to pass through.
